The Lighthouse at Durlston

The Lighthouse at Durlston

This photo from the late 1800s shows the lighthouse at Durlston which stands 160 feet above sea level and was erected in 1885 by Trinity House Brethren.

The lantern was operated by clockwork, giving a flash every four seconds and a clear light of 10 seconds with a light output equals to 20,000 candle power.

This photo was scanned from a book called “Picturesque Swanage Photographic Views of Swanage, Durlston, Studland” and was published at Burts Stores, Swanage which was in the lower High Street.
