The Tennis Courts near Durlston
This photo from the late 1800s shows the well-kept tennis ground surrounded by shrubs and plants. A pavilion with lavatory and dressing rooms is on the right of the photo.
Weekly tickets to use the tennis courts could be purchased from the Gas and Water Companies Office in town or if the courts were vacant, they could be booked for a payment of 6d for each person per hour. This would be approx. £2 today.
Behind the tennis courts is the country residence of Sir John Mowlem.
This photo was scanned from a book called “Picturesque Swanage Photographic Views of Swanage, Durlston, Studland” and was published at Burts Stores, Swanage which was in the lower High Street.
